With the increase in the competition amongst the tech giants like Apple, Samsung and now Microsoft in the truly wireless earbuds department, Google gotta do something special to stand out of the competition and so it does in the Pixel Event after the launch of all-new Pixel 4 and 4 XL.

The new Pixel Buds come with a lot of the same core design ideas as the original, but they make changes in several important areas. For one, the design is now more like traditional earbuds with a rubber tip that “seals” your ear canal. However, the most clever part of Google’s entire design is that that doesn’t actually seal you off from the rest of the world.

There’s a “spatial vent” on the earbud which lets the noise around you in but only to a certain degree. This doesn’t help with noise cancellation, but it does get rid of that sealed-in feeling that most headphones with this design have as claimed by the company.

Also, Google says the Pixel Buds have long-range Bluetooth that can work across “up to three” rooms indoors and “across a football field” outdoors. And the beam-forming mics and accelerometers that detect jaw motion should work the same to improve call quality as well.

The outer material is now a matte finish which feels excellent in the hand, and the contrast of the white outside to the black inside is a great look to me.

The real win for Google here, though, is the size of that case. While the likes of the Galaxy Buds and every other AirPods competitor has a huge case that’s uncomfortable to hold in your pocket, Google has crafted one that’s just about the perfect size although a bit bigger and thicker than the AirPods case.

Paired with an Android phone running Android N or higher, you’ll get some special features: the Pixel Buds can detect the noise level of the environment you’re in and adjust phone volume accordingly, you can just say “Hey Google” to access the Assistant and features like live language translation. Google says more AI features will arrive over time, as well.

Google says it custom-engineered the audio from these headphones. Because they won’t be on sale until next year and don’t have FCC approval but If it lives up to its claims, I think the new Pixel Buds will be unreservedly the best wireless headphones on the market.

The new Pixel Buds will cost $179. Google says the battery should last about 5 hours per charge, with the familiar (Airpods like) floss-style charging case packing an additional 24 hours worth of charge. On-board microphones will adapt the sound based on your environment, and help to cancel out background noise like the wind.
